Cheryl has been really busy in the shop making changes and adding new items. The spring things are beginning to come in and that little touch of spring color is bringing the shop new life. Tom built some new shelving behind the cash desk and now its much easier to manuever and use the computer. Cheryl has moved the clothing and everything else to give the shop a brand new look.

Newer yet are the two fur-babies that have taken up residency inside Sow-a-Seed/Prior Attire. Meet Tara (right ) and Scooter (left). They are two of Walnut's Finest Ferals that have been living in the courtyard. Tara is Scooter's mama, but he is quickly growing much bigger than she is, the manly tom that he is! Very slowly Tom and Cheryl have tamed these two and when winter became so bitter cold, it was only a matter of time before they migrated indoors.

So next time you are in the shop, you may get a glimpse if you look around real quick. They hide from strangers but if you get to know them, you will fall in love with them just like we did!

Snow Falls and Bring Bitter Cold too!

As you can see, we've had quite a snowfall in Walnut. The cold has followed and may I say...BITTER??? Its awful and of course Im worried about the kitties that live outside. Ive brought Tara inside the shop and she is doing well. Her son, Scooter is also welcome to come in, but he has been missing for the last few days and so I am worried.

Ive been working on getting the Christmas tree decorations down and doing some rearranging in the shop. I am hoping to get more clothing and shoes in and of course getting ready for spring. With the weather the way it is right now, spring cannot come soon enough!

Cheryl and Tom have been busy decorating and restocking the shop for Walnut's annual Christmas Walk! It's only a week and a half way to mark your calendars to be there and be there early! The whole town will be decked out to welcome the Christmas Season. Our very first Vintage Market A'ffaire was a real success and a whole lot of fun! We were pleased not only with the many people that attended, but the weather could not have been nicer! Well, I guess the flyer about tells it all, but we are about to embark on the first ever Occasional Sale in Walnut.

This Wall shows two new pictures I got at an auction several weeks back...the wall sconces with the pink and blue rimmed plates were made by Kathy Humann and are to die for cute!

These lantern globe lights were old and dusty. I had them rewired and they are gorgeous!

What to do with those old pillow cases? Combine them to make these cute little tote bags. Totally retro and recycled...or is it upcycled? Made (again) by Kathy Humann

Cheryl and I just got back from Atlantic where the Thrift Store was having a half price sale....be on the lookout for some new and really unique items in the shop. We sort of went nuts (nothing new for us)! We actually discussed how this obsession might be a kind of disease. At least we are buying the stuff and then selling it again, so at least we cant be considered hoarders! Can we? Here are just a few things Ive put in the store the last few weeks. If you havent been in lately you should come and see for yourself!

You can find vintage items, along with handcrafted items and original art! This event is monthly on the last Saturday of every month from May thru November. Plan to attend this fun market. DesMoines' famous farmers market will be held very near, so plan to attend both!

I will be bringing an array of items from vintage clothing to funky knick knacks and even some up cycled items. Kathy from Vintagekats and Katsfabricsnmore will be joining me in this endeavour. Cant wait to see you all there!

Whats up with Metal Trays?

No sure why for sure, but it seems that metal trays just dont loose their popularity. I have many in the shop and have just listed some new ones in my Etsy shop. Go check them out online or come on in to see what I have.

The weather if finally warming up, but we still have lots of snow on the ground. I might be able to go out to the shed and get the Christmas things put away soon. That would be nice...and would make things feel even more like spring.

The winter of 2009/2010 has been horrid. Enough is enough already! We experienced another snow storm on Monday and Tuesday of this week. By Thursday both Cheryl and I were going crazy inside and decided we MUST get to the shop and do some work. Cheryl worked on pricing many new items to be offered in the shop and I worked on pulling, photoing and documenting items for our Etsy shop.

Wintery Day!

Hopefully no one has come to the shop in the last few days. We have another mini blizzard going on and on top of what we already have, things in Walnut are treacherous! Also, Cheryl has picked up an upper respiratory infection and finally saw the Dr. today and is on medication and is home resting. Such is Winter in Walnut!

In these days of economic distress, I thought it might be fun to share some ideas to help the family budget. Sowaseed-Prior Attire is all about saving $$$ and having fun, so hopefully you will come back and check my tips and ideas.

I found a really cool website that teaches how to make homemade laundry detergent. I made a batch yesterday and would like to share that information. Here is the website information: http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/laundrysoap.htm

I did use the Fels Naptha soap and it smells wonderful! According to the writer of this recipe, your laundry detergent will only cost about a penney a load. MORE to SPEND in my SHOP...

Also a tip from my sister who has made this soap as well...Store the soap in half gallon or gallon jugs...the texture of the soap is sort of a watery gel, and you will want to be able to shake it up a little before using. I used empty gallon water jugs that I had.

Hope you've been in to the shop to see how Cheryl has put up all the wonderful decorations and changed the inventory to bring in the holiday season.

I'm Kathy, Cheryl's friend, and I have been writing this blog from the start, pretending to be Cheryl. That hasn't worked out so well, since its hard to pretend to be someone you aren't. Ive decided to be "me" since that's who Ive been for nearly 60 years now.

Cheryl is one of my very best friends. She has such a wonderful ability to decorate, arrange and style...but computers is not one of her many talents. She gave the job to me and I try to do my best.

I cant believe its been so long since I have added a post to the site. Many things have been going on to keep me from the computer, so hopefully no one has given up on me yet.

The shop has actually been busy and we gain more and more recurring customers. It seems once the ladies find my wonderful choice of clothing, they return again and again.

June brought our Antique Walk. Always a stressful time getting ready, but always fun and better yet, we get lots of people from all over the country in the store. If you came, thank you! Hope you will visit us again soon.

I just went to Summer Gift Market in Kansas City a couple weeks ago. I picked up some really fun jewelry, so come in and check it out!

Well that little Pux Pete says six more weeks of winter! Bah-Humbug! But at Sow-a-Seed/Prior Attire we are working to bring some spring time inside! Saspa Tip of the Day!

Tablescaping is the art of arranging objects on tables to show some of the things you love and make your house a home. Follow some simple rules to achieve this art.

Pay attention to sizes, shapes and colors
Scale- Vary heights, shapes and sizes of objects for visual interest. Make sure none seem too large for the space or in comparison to the other objects.
Balance - Again paying attention to size, shape and color, you can achieve a good balance on your tablescape. Place low objects in front and taller items in back, be sure to stagger heights, but avoid stair stepping. A good way to test if an arrangement is balanced is to stand back and squint at it. If one side seems crowded or too "heavy", make some adjustments.

4 Steps to Staying Organized!

Reduce clutter: Sort mail immediatly and put it into piles, recycling junk mail and separating bills from personal correspondence. Also consider paying bills online, and logging on to dmaconsumers.org to reduce junk mail.
Label: Stow awy seasonal items in labeled clear containers to identify the contents the following year. With holiday decorations, include a photo of how you decorated that year so you remember your good ideas and create tradtions.
Clean the computer: Read e-mails once, then delete or save them into folders.
Donate Biannually: Apply the 80/20 percent rule when deciding what to donate. Most people need and use only 20% of their belongings 80% of the time.

Well, the long weekend is over. It was so much fun! We had lots of visitors and the shop bustled with activity! The weather did cooperate. Thank you if you were among the many that came to see me! And if you havent come yet, get on the stick, Christmas is only 22 days away!

SASPA TIP OF THE DAY....No need to do a ton of decorating if you are pressed for time. Take a few of your favorite holiday chach-kas and add them to your decor you already have going on. I (kathy) took mine and sprinkled them among my regular stuff in my china hutch on on my end tables and it looks great. Like I spent a ton of time decorating, but all I did was take it out of a box...Remember, simple is good!

Happy Halloween!

Just want to join this smiley little screen kitty in saying I hope you will all have a safe and happy trick or treating day! Sow-a-seed/Prior-attire is getting ready to take all the fall stuff down and get ready for Christmas. I hope you will check back often to see what's going up in the shop. I have new things and will be taking photos in the next few days to share with you all!

Oh yes! I am going to be starting an online Etsy shop soon. You will be able to find my handmade items there along with some supplies. I will be announcing the "opening" soon.

Now is the time to get those fall bulbs in. Dont wait til the ground freezes! Please, please remember this is the time. Dont be regretting (again) when spring comes, that you didnt add to your tulips and daffodils! Pretty simple to do...dig 4-6" drop in bulb, maybe a little bone meal, cover and in the spring the colors will burst! Have fun.

Cleaning your own jewelry is as simple as white vinegar and water! Mix equal amounts of both and soak for just a few minutes! Use a soft cloth or brush to shine.You dont need to spend tight dollars on jewelry cleaner any more. Common household vinegar will do the trick. Treat your vintage jewelry carefully. It is most likely costume and NOT real gold or silver, so treat it with TLC and you will be happy partners for a long time!

Fall has arrived!

Fall has defiantly arrived at Sow-a-Seed/Prior Attire! The courtyard is decked out in yellow, orange and rust colors and the inside is a sight to behold! Please come see what you can use to bring some festivity into your home or on to your yard!

As the summer winds down its time to start thinking about getting the yard ready for the cold winter winds. I will be sharing a couple things in the next days to jog your memory and hopefully inspire you to get out there and take care of business!

Mower Maintenance: Do a final mow to reduce your lawn mover'[s gas to half a tank or less. Unplug the spark plug and clean grass clippings from the blades and undercarriage; then spray moving parts with WD-40. Add a fuel stabilizer to the tank before storing for the winter!

Fall Open House is over for another year!

What a beautiful day it was! I had many visitors and if one of them was you, I thank you from the bottom of my heart to make my day a success. It sure seemed like everyone had a good time. There was cookies and treats, but the favorite of the day were the courtyard kitties. 3 babie kitties have strayed into my courtyard and they are precious! A little shy and wild, but cute as buttons! Watch for a new blog on "Take Pity on the Kitties..." coming soon. I will be listing the address as soon as it's up and running.

Make your glass sparkle! Clean with white vinegar and newspaper! This will work on your windows and all your pretty glass!
And, what a great way to re-use newspaper!
Why not use a glass or crystal compote dish or covered cake plate, fill with gourds, squash and little pumpkins as a fun fall centerpiece?

"SASPA TIP OF THE DAY!"

Ok, today is an idea for what to do with those old scarves that your grandma "left" you. I have a couple in my closet that have been hanging in there forever. I have a couple that I'm supposed to give my sister and I keep "forgetting". How could I forget such a useful item??? Well, I ran across an idea the other day. I tried it, took pics of it and I want to pass it on to you!

Take one ugly old toss pillow and one beautiful" square scarf that your grandma left you (step 1)
Set pillow diagonally on scarf (step 2)
Fold scarf over pillow (step 3)
Tie a pretty bow and voile'....a nice touch for your room and a reminder of your sweet grandmother! (Finished item!)

No sewing, no cutting, no pinning....anyone can do this! Even you, Luann! Helps to re-use old pillows too! Just think of it, you could use "seasonal" scarves to bring the holiday into any room of the house!

Ok, So now you know that it isn't Cheryl writing these blogs. Its me, Kathy. I love doing this and hope to make this site a place you will want to come to visit often.

These little girls dresses are handmade by my sister Kris Bizzarri from Las Vegas Nevada. These are 100% cotton prints embellished with vintage buttons or other items. The little dress on the top is made from a vintage embroidered pillow case. We are so thrilled to have them in the shop! They may seem a bit "springy" but paired with a long sleeved turtle neck and tights, these little beauties could be worn through our colder months, or grab one before they are gone for next Easter!

Kris has named her new clothing line, Bon-Bons. Defined as: " Something that is pleasing, in a light and frivolous way", Bon-Bons seems the perfect name! We are looking forward to getting more of these little dresses in...stay tuned!

Here at SASPA we realize that times are getting harder economically. That being said, we will be sharing some easy things to do to save and/or to be a bit "green". Part of our purpose is to be an outlet of recycling (antiques, vintage items, prior attire, handmade items made with vintage embellishments etc), so it seems fitting for us to share other ideas for you to save.

Turn the lights out....use candlelight...romantic, fun and smell wonderful! Save energy!
Buy water saving shower heads...
Say NO to paper AND plastic! Carry a couple tote bags in your purse. Get ones that will fold up into a small pouch so you always have them. The totes do no good if you forget them in the car.

Saspa Tip of the Day!

Buckets, galvinized or otherwise, make the best garden accents! Here I have planted flowers in two types of buckets. Get that shabby chic look by setting them on an old weathered drop leaf, or step stool. Dont pass up old ladders either. They are so fun. You can even use them for a quilt rack!

I've finally decided its time to fix my courtyard sidewalk area. There have been some bumps in the "road" that have led to several near accidents and a couple real ones! In order to protect others and myself, it's being fixed today and tomorrow. Hopefully I wont miss many of you. I plan to be open either Friday afternoon or Saturday for sure! Thanks for your patience.

PS. I cannot for the life of me figure out why this darling garden chair is still in my courtyard! It is so cute in the blue and purple color...there is a floral design pottery platter attached to the back of the seat. The flower pot is removable for easy changing and winterizing! Better hurry in or Kathy is going to take it home with her!!!

Never pass up a consignment shop! Do you realize that many women either buy high priced designer clothes or receive them as gifts, and then never wear them? These are the garments , shoes and bags that end up at my shop and others like it. Many of my regular customers shop at Prior Attire almost exclusively! In this recession why not make the best of every dollar you have? The drive to Walnut is worth it!

September is HERE! We are getting ready for fall and today was a busy day. Lots of folks milling around Walnut and many in my shop! Fun! Just a few days ago a gentleman from Iowa Outdoor Magazine was in the shop and asked to take pictures of my courtyard. Who knows, maybe I will be "published" again!

Sneakers or tennis shoes feeling a bit drab and worn out? Try sprucing them up and making them fun with a narrow ribbon in a sweet plaid or bright color to match your outfit! Just cut the ribbon the same length as your regular shoestrings! Have fun with that!

Cheryl is out scanning the "fruited plain" for goodies that will delight you, from new home decor, shabby chic furniture to wonderful collections of clothing, shoes and accessories. Susan's head is spinning with all the glorious ideas for cards and wall art. Her newest collection, "Kitty Tails" is so adorable you will want to adopt one ( a real one!). KathyAnne is not only busy with this new blog, but she is trying to focus on more aprons and green bags and eventually would like to have some couch quilts finished to put in the shop.
